The global pandemic of a new coronavirus infection has affected not only the labor activity and social activity of the population, but also the economies of all countries without exception, seriously slowing down their growth rates, reducing production and electricity consumption, collapsing demand for raw materials and goods, and significantly reducing transport flows. All this had a direct impact on the reduction of pollutant emissions into the atmosphere and led to a short-term improvement in air quality. According to analysts at the British climate change portal Carbonbrief, the economic crisis caused by the pandemic could lead to the largest reduction in emissions on record. Already now this figure (in quantitative terms) is 6 times higher than during the global financial crisis of 2008, and more than 2 times higher than during the Second World War. As part of monitoring observations of the state and quality of ambient air during the pandemic and the introduction of restrictive measures, a significant decrease in the concentrations of pollutants around the world is recorded, especially in large cities and industrial centers.
