Asceticism in the Tradition of Pesantren: An Eco-Critical Discourse

Asceticism is vital the religiosity of santri and enhancing their devotion to Creator through Islamic practices in pesantren life. This research is urgent for two reasons. First, it examines the distinctive linguistic discourse of pesantren as a manifestation of teachings on self-control against materialism. Second, this research underscores the connection between pesantren ideals and social practices, highlighting how the ecological traditions of pesantren shape the ascetic character of santri. This research is qualitative, employing eco-critical discourse. This study aims to describe of linguistic discourse in the pesantren environment that contains ascetic values and ecological traditions of pesantren as teachings infused with asceticism. Two findings emerge. First, the linguistic discourse that includes elements of asceticism is manifested through Arabic calligraphy and advice from kyai, scholars, emphasizing teachings on consistency in devotion to Allah, self-reflection for moral and intellectual improvement, and concept of avoiding worldly luxury. Second, the ecological traditions of pesantren infused with asceticism are expresse through the relationship of the santri to Allah and the surrounding environment. In conclusion, the concept of asceticism within pesantren traditions is expressed through linguistic discourse, representing a distinctive characteristic of pesantren life aimed at deepening the connection with Creator through Islamic spirituality and simplicity.
