Projecting Kurokawa: From "Japanese Symbol" to Global Architecture

Abstract

This study compares articles on Kisho Kurokawa published in the British journal Architectural Review from 1970 to 2005 with those featured in the Japanese architectural magazine, Shinkenchiku. Owing to the distinct cultural contexts of their readerships, the former publication favoured a projection of Kurokawa rooted in his Japanese background, while the latter served as a platform for his own narratives. As Kurokawa’s career expanded onto the global stage, how did the architectural projections made by these magazines evolve to characterize his work? It aims to visualize “Projection” not merely as a limited concept like projection methods or visual techniques, but as the process through which architecture is understood across places and times, thereby revealing the architect's response to media and the translation process.
