Digital Projection and Spatial Ideation: Parallels Between Front-end Development and Architectural Design

Abstract
This paper proposes that front-end development constitutes a contemporary mode of architectural projection. Rather than treating interfaces as visual layers or technical outputs, it argues that executable front-end systems operate as projective constructs that actively organize spatial conditions for action. Drawing on architectural theories of projection and typology, the study demonstrates a functional equivalence between architectural drawings and executable interfaces: both encode hierarchy, thresholds, circulation and program prior to and during use. Throughout the analysis, the paper maps the Vitruvian triad onto digital production and reinterprets UI components as typological elements—stable yet context-dependent units analogous to rooms, corridors and thresholds. Responsive design, particularly through media queries, is examined as a form of conditional projection that embeds multiple spatial states within a single operative system, thereby extending architectural thinking into real-time adaptation. A case study of a contemporary customer platform demonstrates that digitally mediated environments satisfy core criteria of architectural space: spatial order, embodied navigation cognitive engagement and social-functional structuring. In an era of hybrid environments shaped by interfaces, data flows and augmented overlays, excluding digital spatiality from architectural discourse is no longer tenable. The paper therefore calls for its integration into architectural theory as a legitimate domain of spatial ideation.
