From architectural projection to a cartography of relations: The meta-representation for transcri-bing the shifting nature of 20th-century buildings

Abstract
The changing nature of 20th-century buildings is a major feature of this architecture. It reflects the evolving nature of architectural projects in terms of design and of the transformations that lie ahead for a heritage that is heading towards social and ecological obsolescence. This paper is a proposal to build a tool called meta-representation, using a documentation method based on digital tools. Considering that a building is a sum of representations (textual but above all graphic), we wish to produce a cartographic representation that can include all representations, not as an abstract table, but as a connection between the various documented data that make it possible to transcribe a 20th-century building. These relationships and the related data are organised via an ontology system, which is represented in the Re-searchspace platform used to support the construction of the cartography. By explaining this approach through 20th-century French buildings, we explore how each object can lead to a spatial transcription of the knowledge graph, and therefore new knowledge relationships, whose graphic iterations offer explanations for better dissemination and understanding of architecture.
