Research on the Impact of Social Media Information Dissemination Mechanism on the Formation and Dissolution of Female Stereotypes

Social media provides opportunities for women to challenge traditional norms through self-expression and empowerment content, but algorithmic mechanisms and user behavior often perpetuate gender stereotypes. This study uses TikTok as a case to explore the complex relationship between Exposure to Diversified Content (EDC) and Gender Stereotype Reinforcement (GSR) on short video platforms. Through a quantitative survey of active TikTok users, the study examines how interaction frequency with female-related content is associated with awareness of gender stereotypes. The findings reveal a contradictory dynamic: while diversified content has the potential to break stereotypes, algorithmic bias and selective exposure may inadvertently reinforce these stereotypes. This study suggests that technological safeguards should be strengthened to ensure the diversity and fairness of information dissemination on social media, avoiding the output and spread of content like stereotypes. Additionally, the research emphasizes the necessity of raising individual awareness to cope with diversified content in the information age. In summary, the study highlights the need to promote balanced content distribution, enhance user media literacy, and conduct cross-cultural research to better understand these mechanisms.
