Abstract
This study reviews and compares empirical research on how women’s depression symptoms are affected by verbal and physical abuse in intimate relationships. Physical and verbal abuse are both significantly linked to higher rates of depression among women, according to a review of six major studies. Physical abuse is linked to acute trauma and combined psychiatric conditions, while verbal abuse, which includes emotional manipulation and threats, causes chronic emotional distress and undermines self-esteem. Studies find that women who experience both types of abuse are more susceptible to depressive symptoms. These findings underscore the significance of addressing all forms of abuse, particularly verbal abuse, in clinical assessments, prevention programs, and public policy. Healthcare professionals should be trained to screen for emotional indicators of abuse. Future research should employ culturally varied samples and longitudinal designs to further investigate how psychosocial and demographic variables might mitigate the effects of abuse on depression.
