Abstract
Depression is a common and disabling mental health condition that affects people of all ages and backgrounds. In response, mental health professionals have been exploring treatments that go beyond symptom reduction to address the full experience of the person. This review focuses on two approaches: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dance Movement Therapy (DMT). CBT is a well-established, problem-oriented method supported by decades of evidence. DMT offers a non-verbal, movement-based way to process emotion—particularly valuable for those who find traditional talk therapies difficult. Based on prior studies, this paper highlights the strengths and limitations of both therapies. While CBT excels in structure and cognitive clarity, DMT facilitates motional expression and embodied healing. The evidence suggests that combining the two may provide a more holistic and person-centered path forward. Researchers must continue refining research on DMT, exploring integration models, and developing flexible, compassionate care that meets people’s needs.
