Nous allons à Mons. Du régime à l’adjet

Résumé

Si elle paraissait évidente hier, l’identification de la fonction du complément à Mons dans Nous allons à Mons pose aujourd’hui beaucoup de problèmes aux enseignants et aux concepteurs de manuels. Depuis la séparation des compléments du verbe et des compléments de phrase prônée par le Ministère dans les années 1970 en France, il est en effet devenu difficile d’indexer les compléments comme à Mons, non suppressibles comme les COD/COI mais renseignant sur les circonstances comme les compléments circonstanciels (CC), sinon en en faisant une catégorie à part (e.g. le complément essentiel de lieu). La distinction COD/COI et CC ne va pas sans rappeler l’opposition des actants et des circonstants chez Tesnière (1959) qui, cependant, reconnaissait très vite déjà les limites de ce binôme en français. C’est en réponse à cette difficulté que le terme d’adjet a vu le jour, lequel n’apporte pas, cependant, toutes les réponses espérées.

Abstract

“Nous allons à Mons”. From the object to the adject. If it appeared obvious yesterday, the identification of the function of à Mons in Nous allons à Mons poses today many problems to the teachers and the authors of textbooks. Since the separation of the complements of the verb and the complements of the phrase approved by the Ministry in the 1970s in France, the classification of a complement like "à Mons" is difficult: this complement is non-suppressible (like (in)direct object complements) and it expresses the place (like adverbial complements). The distinction between IOC and AC is reminiscent of the opposition of actants and circumstants (Tesnière 1959). However, Tesnière, soon recognized the limits of this binomial in French. It is in response to this difficulty that the term "adjet" came into existence, which does not, however, bring all the expected answers.
