The uses of neutrality in Belgian political and print media discourse during a double polemic on the wearing of religious symbols in the public service The word neutrality, polysemic and unstable in the Belgian context, found itself at the centre of a double polemic on the wearing of convictional signs in the Belgian civil service in spring 2021. In this article, which is in line with research in political lexicology, we study the circulation of the word neutrality in Belgian political and media discourse between April 2021 and October 2021 and the discursive processes to which the word was subjected in the context of this double polemic, one taking place within the Brussels transport company and the other within the Belgian federal government. We will see that although the notion of neutrality is generally claimed by all the actors studied, dissensus becomes visible as soon as we open the debate on the nature of the latter.
