This article explores the development of the tourism industry in Kazakhstan’s newly established Abay region, emphasizing its untapped tourism potential. The primary aim is to identify strategies for enhancing the region’s tourism and hospitality sectors, contributing to regional economic growth. The study assesses the current state of tourism, highlighting challenges and proposing solutions to improve the sector. Based on international best practices, a model for enhancing competitiveness and efficiency in Abay’s tourism sector is introduced. The research identifies key tourism areas including event tourism, cultural and educational tourism, eco-tourism, youth tourism, historical and cultural tourism, sanatorium and resort tourism, and agrotourism. Additionally, the study proposes a classification system for tourism products, categorizing Abay based on different tourism types, positioning it as a comprehensive tourist destination. A detailed analysis of the region’s economic and infrastructure conditions is provided, alongside a classification of tourist destinations to help systematize the tourism offerings. The findings suggest that addressing current gaps and adopting a strategic roadmap will improve Abay’s tourism development, fostering regional growth and enhancing competitiveness in the global tourism market.
