Abstract
Adolescence is a critical period for psychological development and the formation of social competence. Changes in the family environment and fluctuations in emotional experiences, among other childhood experiences, profoundly impact adolescents’ social adaptability. Nowadays, negative childhood experiences (NCEs) such as domestic violence, parental divorce, and also parental mental illness are increasingly prevalent in China. These childhood experiences may lead to emotional disorders, a lack of security, and social withdrawal among adolescents as well. The present study, based on results from empirical research, aims to reveal the mechanisms through which childhood experiences influence adolescent social competence (specifically social anxiety, social avoidance, and social confidence). This study further establishes a mediating model. The findings provide a scientific basis for future, targeted interventions addressing adolescent psychological issues. This encompasses both the detrimental effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on adolescent social psychology and the potential benefits offered by a “Trauma-Emotion-Social” intervention framework for adolescents.
