Le schwa dans l’accent français méridional

Résumé

La réalisation régulière du e muet ou schwa compte parmi les traits les plus caractéristiques de l’accent français méridional. Or, cette réalisation régulière est en train de se perdre en faveur d’un nivellement vers le taux de réalisation de schwa beaucoup plus bas du français septentrional, notamment chez les jeunes générations, peut-être plus orientées vers un français de référence. Nous étudions ici le taux de réalisation de schwa dans un groupe de locuteurs et locutrices bien enraciné*es dans la culture de la France méridionale par leur apprentissage de l’occitan comme langue seconde. Nous retrouvons le même effet d’âge observé dans toutes les études antérieures du schwa en français méridional, peut-être atténué cependant par l’identification de nos locutrices et locuteurs avec le Sud de la France. Une tâche de jugement de l’accent de nos participant*es montre toutefois que la présence régulière du schwa est nécessaire, mais loin d’être suffisante, pour percevoir une locutrice ou locuteur donné*e comme ayant un accent méridional en français. Notre étude contribuera à une meilleure compréhension de l’état actuel de l’accent français méridional.

Resumen

Schwa in the Southern French accent. The regular realisation of the so-called e muet or schwa is one of the most characteristic traits of the Southern French accent. This regular realisation, however, is gradually lost in favour of a levelling toward the much lower schwa realisation rate of Northern French, most notably in the younger generations, who are perhaps more oriented toward Standard French. We study here the schwa realisation rate in a group of speakers well attached to Southern French culture through their acquisition of Occitan as a second language. We find the same age effect as observed in earlier studies on schwa in Southern French, perhaps attenuated however through our speakers’ attachment to Southern France. A rating task carried out on the accent of our participants shows that the regular presence of schwa is necessary, but not sufficient, to perceive a given speaker as having a Southern French accent. Our study aims at contributing towards a better understanding of the current state of the Southern French accent.
