Autour des polynômes d’Al-Qatrawānī
Around the polynomials of Al-Qatrawānī
Abstract
This article is part of a study that focuses on the issue of polynomials in Arab mathematicians during the Middle Ages. Specifically, it delves into one of the most prominent mathematicians of the Muslim West during the 15th century, Al-Qatrawani. The main focus is on his book titled “Rashfat ar-ruḍāb min thughūr acmāl al-ḥisāb,” in which the author presents a distinct and original chapter addressing the problem of polynomials. The article highlights that Al-Qatrawani?s approach to this issue differs from the oriental school, represented by books like “al-Badiⅽ fī l-ḥisāb” by al-Karajī and “albāhir fī l-jabr wa l-muqābala” by as-Samaw’al. This is particularly evident in his treatment of extracting the cubic root of a polynomial. The uniqueness and richness of Al-Qatrawānī?s book “Rashfat arruāb” lie in its departure from the mathematical ideas (polynomials) prevalent among Maghrebian mathematicians. Additionally, it appears to be highly developed compared to the innovations of the Oriental school.
