De l’exemplification à la catégorisation approximative : étude de la construction [[X]_SN genre [Y]_SN]

Résumé

Dans cet article, je me propose d’étudier la construction [[X]SN genre [Y]SN] dans laquelle le nom genre met en relation deux syntagmes nominaux, comme dans les exemples (1) et (2) :

  sinon il reste plus cas coller un par un des cailloux avec un truc genre mastic polyeurethane (Doc., bricolage).

• (2)

  Pour le moment, au bout de 9 jours de prises, rien n’a changé, ni mon moral, ni les douleurs et mêmes les gratouillis genre urticaire. (Doc., Alzheimer & Parkinson) Cette étude se fonde sur un corpus de messages issus de forums en ligne, la construction étant particulièrement fréquente dans ce type de discours. Je montre que la construction [[X]SN genre [Y]SN] possède un véritable sens, non strictement compositionnel, ce qui en fait une authentique construction au sens de la Grammaire de construction. En effet, cette construction, fondamentalement exemplifiante, fait émerger en discours une catégorie de façon ad hoc, sur la base d’une catégorie-étalon dénotée par [X]SN et d’un ou de plusieurs particuliers dénotés par [Y]SN. De façon plus marginale, la construction présente une seconde interprétation, plus proche de la catégorisation approximative que de l’exemplification (en lien notamment avec des problèmes de dénomination). L’analyse développée dans ce travail est transposable à d’autres constructions similaires impliquant d’autres noms que genre (e.g. style, type, façon) et des [X]SN et [Y]SN d’autres natures (e.g. syntagmes adjectivaux, adverbiaux ; propositions complètes).

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the construction [[X]SN genre [Y]SN] in which the noun genre connects two noun phrases, as in examples (1) and (2) :

  Pour le moment, au bout de 9 jours de prises, rien n’a changé, ni mon moral, ni les douleurs et mêmes les gratouillis genre urticaire. (Doc., Alzheimer & Parkinson) ‘For now, after 9 days of treatment, nothing has changed, neither my mood, nor the pains, nor even the urticaria-like itches’

  This study is based on a corpus of messages taken from online forums, as the construction is particularly frequent in this type of discourse. I show that the construction [[X]SN genre [Y]SN] has a real, non strictly compositional meaning, that makes it a genuine construction as defined by construction grammar. Being fundamentally exemplifying, this construction gives rise to an ad hoc category in discourse on the basis of a category denoted by [X]SN and one or more individuals denoted by [Y]SN. Marginally, the construction offers another interpretation, which is closer to approximative categorisation than to exemplification (especially in relation to naming issues). The analysis developed in this study is transposable to other similar constructions involving other nouns than genre (e.g. style ‘style’, type ‘type, sort’, façon ‘way’) and [X]SN and [Y]SN of a different nature (e.g. adjective phrases, adverb phrases, full clauses).
