At the origin of the history of the French language : 1802-1841. The beginnings of the history of the French language, at the end of the XVIIIth and in the first half of the XIXth century, merge with the birth of a philology that differs from the German model being developed at the same time. While the latter promotes researches based on the achievements of historical and comparative grammar, French philology is a quest for the origins of French literature. Its researchers will take almost half a century to free themselves from the primacy of French as evidenced by the literary texts of the past, especially of the Middle Ages, and to establish their work on the knowledge of the historical grammar of the French language. Hence this antagonism permanent until today between external history and internal history of the language which covers the distinction between the history of the french language (mostly external) and the french historical linguistics (fundamentally internal).
