Spelling and linguistic competence: what the letter e means in french crie. We are studying a confusion between homophone nouns and verbs that are only distinguished in writing by a final e. We show that people making this mistake master the noun/verb difference, as well as the properties of mute e and of latent consonants of French. We revisit the morphological status of this e, and present an educational device developped for young adults, which uses digital resources to integrate these different results.
